Decorating Cupcakes

What you will need:

  • pre-cooked cupcakes, cooled (these can be either plain or chocolate)
  • bowls coloured icing, made using natural food colourings such as Hullabaloo or Hopper. If you have older children, you could have the icing creamier and in piping bags for them to swirl on.
  • decorations for the top of the cupcakes. For edible, choose from Natural Confectionary Co. Lollies, Snack size, Twix and Snickers, chopped, Nestle Choc bits in milk, dark and white chocolate, sliced fruit such as strawberries or kiwi fruit, berries, additive free sprinkles and pure icing sugar for dusting. For inedible, choose from small plastic animals, toy cars, stickers, paper or material flowers and scrapbooking embellishments such as butterflies.
  • plastic or blunt knifes for spreading the icing (small spoons are good for the littler ones)
  • small paper plates for each child to put their cupcake on.
  • some wipes or wet washers for cleaning hands when you are all finished.

Setting up:

  • Cover your table with a plastic tablecloth
  • Place the items for decorating into small bowls or in piles on a tray.
  • Arrange the icing, decorations and knives on the table.
  • Place your large plate of cupcakes towards the back of the table and put one on a small plate for each child as the arrive to decorate their cupcake (if you have a lot of children, it may help to write their name on the plate to avoid confusion when they are all finished).
  • Let the children decorate their cupcakes (a few at a time). It is a good idea to have at least 2 cupcakes per child as this is a popular activity. Smaller, bite sized cupcakes could also be used.
